WfW, moreover, has had several offshoots, Working for Woodlands, Working for Wetlands, Working on Fire, and together these programmes are not only providing thousands of jobs, and actively combating desertification and loss of biodiversity, but also contributing to the overarching goal of mainstreaming biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, and proactive work to improve social wellbeing at a national scale. (See the article “Development made easy” for a brief discussion of such an integrative economic development strategy wherein natural capital is acknowledged as the ultimate source of all our resources and our wellbeing.) As was noted in the first RNC book , restoration conducted in this manner is about economic development as much as it is about conservation. Clewell and Aronson’s book also provides background material and virtual field trips illustrating this holistic approach. At present there are many pilot programmes under way in each of the nine bioregions of the country, and several more are under development. Here we describe several of the more notable ones, in which we are involved, and guide the visitor to the appropriate hyperlinks for several others.
